St. Simons Island - Edward W. Broker passed away at his home July 27. Born in New Haven, CT on March 2, 1922, Mr. Broker was the son of Edward August Broker and Margaret Therese Malone Broker. He was predeceased by his brother John Joseph Broker and his sisters Jean Marie and Shirley Broker, Katheryn Jude Gunneson and Muriel Margaret Figlewski, and is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret McGoldrick Broker, and his brothers James Miles (Anna) Broker of New Haven and Robert Clifford (Carol) Broker of Hingham, MA. He is also survived by his children Jean B. (George C.) Wommack, of Blythe Island, GA; Mary M. “Meg” (Thomas B.) Haisten, of St. Simons Is., GA; William K. Broker, Savannah; Dr. Robert E. (Amy) Broker, Greenville, SC; M. Lisa (T. Martin) Smith, St. Simons Is., GA; and Patrick P. Broker of Atlanta, as well as twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren
Following graduation from Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Mr. Broker served in the IXth Army,102nd Infantry (the Ozark) Division during World War II. Serving in the European Theatre, he was wounded near Beek, the Netherlands. Serving as a 1st Lieutenant, he was among the soldiers who uncovered Nazi war crimes at Gardelegen and witnessed the horrors of Nazi concentration camps.
During the War he was stationed at Camp Wheeler outside Macon where he met Mary Margaret “Peg” McGoldrick and they were married in 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Macon. He worked for Marbut Company, a wholesale plumbing, heating & air conditioning firm, managing its operations in Tallahassee and Brunswick. Upon the company's purchase by Hughes Supply, his management extended to Albany, Valdosta and Savannah He was a member of the Brunswick Jaycees, the Board of Directors of Youth (f/k/a Boys) Estate, the Brunswick Kiwanis Club, and the Homebuilders Association.
An active Roman Catholic, he helped establish St. William Parish on St. Simons, served as a lector and on its Parish Council. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Council 4847, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He served on the Board of St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.
A Rosary will take place Sunday, August 3, at 5:00 p.m. followed by visitation until 7 p.m. at St. William Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, August 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place immediately thereafter in Christ Church Cemetery. Pall bearers will be T. Brooks Haisten, III, Edward A. Wommack, R. Ryan Wommack, Dr. G. Michael Wommack, John P. Broker, Wm. Reynolds Broker and R. Morgan Broker. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, 1121 Union St., Brunswick, GA 31520-0315 or charity of the donor's choice.
