Edward James Japhe

Born on March 22, 1929, in New York City, Ed was raised in Miami Beach, graduated from the University of Miami and served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Residing in Northside Atlanta for over 60 years, he made both Sea Island and St. Simons his coastal home since 2012.

A lifelong entrepreneur, he founded and successfully operated three commercial businesses: Advance Industrial Security, a commercial security guard company; Carbomin Corp., a coal brokerage; and Electronic Marketing Company, an outdoor advertising agency.

Outside of his professional life, Ed was an active member of the Sea Island Club, maintained a long-term membership in the Capital City Club, and belonged to YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization), a global leadership community for chief executives under 45, as well as the World Business Council.

He enjoyed following the stock market, traveling the world, playing gin and backgammon with friends, dining well, and staying active.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Murray Japhe and Nancy Berman Knobel Levy; and his wife of 43 years, Paula Purcell Japhe. He is survived by his children, Betsy (Sean) McLarney, Charles (Diana) Japhe, Maryann (Keith) Ingham, and Tom (Song) Japhe; and three cherished grandchildren, Ian, Jason, and Annie.

A sunset celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 20, from 5-8pm at his home, 100 Strachan Lane, in St. Simons Island. In lieu of flowers, a gift in his memory can be made to the St. Simons Land Trust https://sslt.org/dontate/tribute-gifts/
