Born May 7, 1931 in Baltimore, MD and raised in Towson, MD, she was the daughter of William Carrington Stettinius and Achsah Petre Stettinius. Betty grew up on the family farm “Pot Spring” in Towson, and was a successful equestrian in her early years. She graduated from the Westover School in Middlebury, CT in 1948. Betty moved to Marion, MA in 1951, and would become a long-time resident of her new home.
During her years in Marion she was an active member of the community as a founder of the Marion Garden Discussion Group, a member of the Visiting Nurse Association and a leader of the Girl Scout Mariner troop. In addition, she was a long time member of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. For many years, she was a “Pink Lady” at the Boston Lying In Hospital and volunteered at the Dedham Women’s Exchange. Betty was active sportswoman, and at various times in her life enjoyed horseback riding, sailing, skiing, curling, and most of all golf which she enjoyed at the Kittansett and Sea Island Clubs. She gravitated to the friendships, camaraderie, and competition that these activities provided. She was a skilled needleworker, producing many beautiful needlepoint pieces and quilts. In 1990 Betty and John moved to St. Simons Island, GA, and they quickly established themselves in the community of their new home. Betty was involved with Christ Church, Frederica, most notably as a docent, and with the Cassina Garden Club. She remained an active member of both.
Betty was the youngest and last surviving member of her siblings Edward Stettinius, Achsah O’Donovan, and Carol Gorman. She is survived by her loving children Carol Whitney Cudahy, Anita Whitney, and George Hayward Whitney III, who will miss her very much. As will her five grandchildren, Nathaniel and William Cudahy, George and Elizabeth Whitney, and Nicolas Alvarez, who knew her as Monnie.
A private family service and a Celebration of Life will be held at future dates.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to Christ Church Frederica, or the Cassina Garden Club, P.O. Box 20191, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
