Ellen E. Fleming
August 3, 1945 – May 3, 2019
Ellen E. Fleming, 73, of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, entered peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Southeast Georgia Health System.
Ellen was born on August 3, 1945, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late George Noland Fleming and the late Helen Martz Fleming.
Ellen always had a passion for education. She held a Bachelor of Arts in History, Social Studies, and Secondary Education from George Washington University and also attended the University of Virginia. She earned her Master of Education degree from Georgia State University.
She served as a teacher, principal, and senior administrator at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, GA, The Ellis School in Pittsburgh, PA, and Frederica Academy on St. Simons Island, GA, for more than four decades. After serving as the Acting President of The Westminster Schools, Ellen relocated to her East Beach home on Saint Simons in 2004 to become the Head of School at Frederica Academy.
During her tenure at Frederica, Ellen embraced the school’s mission while significantly expanding the size of the school’s campus and presence within the Golden Isles community. She was devoted to the school and its students, teachers, coaches, parents, trustees, alumni, and benefactors. Upon her retirement in 2011, Ellen became an active community volunteer in Glynn County before returning to lead Frederica Academy again in 2017 for two additional school years. She is Frederica Academy’s longest-serving Head of School.
Ellen will always be remembered for living her life for education and her church. She was strong in her faith and an active member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church. She was also a past member of Frederica Academy’s Board of Visitors, Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation Board of Directors, Coastal Georgia Historical Society Board of Directors, St. Simons Presbyterian Church Session, and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Board. For many years, she served on the Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia and as a member of the Brunswick Rotary Club.

Several of Ellen’s cousins also survive.
Ellen loved to spend time with her family and friends. She was a born leader and an avid reader. She also enjoyed traveling. Her family and friends will have many fond memories to treasure for years to come.
A memorial service to honor Ellen’s life will be held at St. Simons Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Alan Dyer officiating. A reception will follow the service at Frederica Academy.

Ellen was a person who believed in God and who believed in the beauty and mystery of life. Ellen touched countless lives in ways beyond words..... my own life included. I will forever treasure each conversation and each moment I ever had, beside her. I'll miss you Ellen, but have faith, I'll see you again***

It was so hard to hear the heartbreaking news of Ellen’s sudden death. No one can prepare you for a loss; it comes like a swift wind. Ellen was an amazing influence and touched so many lives in ways that we’ll never know. She has left us with so many wonderful memories. I will cherish them forever. While I mourn the loss of a great woman, I feel blessed and honored that she was a part of my life. God Bless

Ellen was a mentor, colleague and friend. Ellen took a leap of faith when she hired me to act as the Principal of the Middle School at Frederica; I was new to administration, new to SSI and unproven, to say the least. Ellen relied on the relationship we had built at Westminster to support my early efforts and we grew a strong working relationship, deepening our friendship at the same time. She spent many hours with my family, and I know she loved watching my children grow up.
When I left Frederica, Ellen gave me a gift that remains one of my treasured possessions. Early in her teaching life, someone gave Ellen a brass handbell with her initials on it. It didn’t feel right for me to accept her gift at the time but it now sits on my office bookcase. Ellen gave me so much - an opportunity to gain leadership experience, a chance to learn from her and the gift of a long, warm and important friendship. The bell is a perfect symbol of all of that - elegant, with a clear and strong voice. I’ll always treasure my time with Ellen and know she is in a good place with the God she loved so much. I’m grateful for all she did for me and I’ll miss her!

I can't remember when I first met Ms. Fleming but I know that she was a very sweet person. Every time that I saw her, she would talk to me for a little while. I will miss seeing her sweet smile. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Anytime I needed to speak to Ellen she made herself available including in the evenings. She and Nancy always asked me about my mom and you could tell it was very genuine.
I always counted on seeing her in the front row at our basketball games and she never mixed words that she loved basketball. I will miss her so much at our games and seeing her smiling face when we won.
Thank you for everything Ellen, you truly were one of a kind, you will be missed. You will always be FAs number 1 basketball fan.
