

The family of Elton Farrell Hinson, Sr. sadly shares with our community his peaceful passing in his home that he and his wife Elizabeth so lovingly shared and cared for at 153 Fairway Oaks Drive, Brunswick, Georgia, since 1972. On April 5, 2011, Elton was surrounded by his loving and supportive family during his passing.
Those who will be involved in his funeral service are Reverend Jim Crandall, Reverend Paul McKenzie, Elton’s son Chief Magistrate of Effingham County Charles Scott Hinson, Reverend Barry Owens and musicians Reverend Tommy McMillan, Organist Sandra Brunson, Soloist Mary Gibbs, and Trombonist Mickey Wendel, who will provide Elton’s favorite music, music Elton said that would put a smile on his face.
On April 8, 2011, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home, 3321 Glynn Avenue, Brunswick, Georgia, 31520 a time of visitation will be held for all of Elton’s family, friends, students, team mates, football and baseball players he coached and mentored, and those he served with in the Georgia Army National Guard.
On April 9, 2011, at First Baptist Church, 708 Mansfield Street, Brunswick, Georgia, 31520 Elton’s funeral will be heldat 11:00 AM just as Elton had planned since March 3, 1999, written in his own hand. After the funeral, Elton will be laid to rest with his brother and sister and parents in a peaceful shady family plot at the Hoboken City Cemetery, Hoboken, Georgia.
Elton Farrell Hinson, Sr. was born March 26, 1931, in Hoboken, Georgia to Agrippa “Grip”
and Ollie Inez Marlowe Hinson. He was their tenth child, joining sisters Metty, Betty, Mildred Juanita (Tasciotti), Maida Ernestine (Hanchey), Reba Eloise (Farmer), Nihlia Rose, Gloria June (Drumps) and his brothers Colan Cornelius, Harold Lloyd, and Ronald Edward, all of whom preceded Elton in death. He is loved and has been with his two sisters who survive him, Irma Jean (Davis), and Velva Ann (McQuaig Allan).
Elton happily married Sarah Elizabeth Barker on January 29, 1956 at Hebardville Baptist Church, Waycross, Georgia, and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with their family.
Elton is survived by his beautiful wife Elizabeth who he lovingly called “Baby”, his four sons who he always called by number, #1: Elton “Farrell” Jr. (Erica) of Brunswick, GA; #2 James Steven (Linda) of Brunswick, GA; #3 Charles Scott (Sue Nell) of Guyton, GA; #4 Jeffery Todd of Lawrenceville, GA. Grandchildren are Candace Cheri Hinson Mosley (James); James Steven Hinson, Jr.; Sarah Elizabeth Hinson; Laura Catherine Hinson; Joshua Scott Hinson; Zachariah Michael Hinson. Elton’s only great-grandchild is Jayden Chase Hinson, age 7, son of granddaughter Candace, grandson of son Farrell, who lived with Elton and Elizabeth for five years. Mentoring Jayden was one of Elton’s proudest accomplishments. Elton also had two grandchildren he never got to spend enough time with because God needed two infant angels, Josiah Farrell Hinson and his little brother Elijah Todd Hinson, sons of Farrell Hinson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews all over the world.
Pallbearers will be Wesley McQuaig, Joseph Farmer, Peter Davis, Jr., Marlowe Hinson,
Harry Clark, Quinton Slaughter, and Derrick Hulsey.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Glynn Academy class of 1950, the 1964 Glynn Academy Championship Football Team, 1967-1970 Brunswick High School Football Teams, 1968-1978 Brunswick High School Baseball Teams, and the Marshland Credit Union Board of Directors.
Elton loved coaching young men in both football and baseball at Glynn Academy and Brunswick High Schools. He taught Biology in both schools, was an Assistant Principal at Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy, and retired as Principal of McIntosh County Academy. He is recognized in our community everywhere he goes as “my greatest teacher, mentor, and coach”. Elton’s family has begun a Memorial Scholarship Baseball Fund in his memory as Elton was the coach of Brunswick High School’s first baseball team and the family asks that donations for this scholarship fund be sent to attention of Elizabeth Hinson at 153 Fairway Oaks Drive, Brunswick, Georgia 31525.
Elton was also a member of the Glynn Academy Alumni Association and was involved in the Old School Restoration.
Elton was a strong supporter and contributor to the Boy Scouts of America where he proudly bragged about his son Steven and his grandson Steven being Eagle Scouts.
Elton was a Deacon at First Baptist Church, Brunswick, Georgia.
Elton was a strong force in the Georgia Military, enlisting February 1, 1949, in Waycross, Georgia, with his enlisted service running from February 1, 1949 until September 11, 1958, becoming Battalion Sergeant Major E-9. On December 1, 1988, he reached his most accomplished goal, “Brigadier General” State Headquarters, Georgia Army National Guard. He was assigned to the following units: HQ & Svc Co, 171 AIB GaARNG, Waycross, GA; HQ Company, 110th Signal Battalion, GaARNG; Medical Service Corps, HQ Company, 1st ARBn, 124th IN, FIARNG; HQ 3rd BN 118th Arty, GaARNG; 1st Bn 230th Field Artillery, GaARNG; Commander, 118 Field Artillery Brigade; HQ, Georgia ARNG.
