The man, the myth, the legend - Ernest Dunwoodie Carter, 85, ran into the arms of his Savior on Wednesday, January 19th. Ernest was born on May 31st, 1936 to the late Dunwoodie and Theresa Carter in Brunswick, Ga. He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1955. He was a National Guard Airman, serving his country for 6 years with honor. He worked at Central Hardware for 7 years and then worked at Brunswick Pulp and Paper for 32 years. He retired from Georgia Pacific (Brunswick Pulp and Paper) in June of 1995. He married the love of his entire life, Sylvia Pipkin Carter, on June 14, 1961.
Ernest was a brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family - teaching them all how to hunt, tie a hook on a line, drive a stick shift, love your spouse, and most importantly, to be a Christian. He shared a love for nature with his family - being an avid hunter and fisherman. Among the greatest memories are rides in the woods, looking for “the buck”, traveling to Tennessee to see the colors change and driving through Cades Cove.
Ernest was known for his special jokes - from the famous “stool sample” to the “sweet thang” sugar packets. He never met a stranger. Shaking your hand and saying “don’t start nothing and there won’t be nothing” with a stank eye look and eyebrows going up and down. He was known as “Papa” to several. He would tell stories and share life secrets to anyone that would listen. We are so thankful for the memories, the laughs and the serious question “Do you know the Lord?”
Papa loved to play with his babies, watching them run, laugh, and enjoy life. His smile would light up the room when they walked in. He would get in the floor and play right along with them.
Ernest is preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Daniel Carter; son-in-law, Marvin Smith; and a grandson, Jordan Carter. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Pipkin Carter of Brunswick; daughter, Peggy Johnson (Rod) of Brunswick; son, Phillip Carter (Tennessee), Peter Carter (Donna), and Joy Landon (Marvin) both of Brunswick. Brother-Isham William Carter (Carol), Sisters-Marlyn JoAnn Melton (Wayne), Theresa Delores Williamson (Russell), all of Brunswick, Margaret Janie Williamson (James) of Nahunta, Ga. Grandchildren - Cliff Smith (Amanda), Ernie White, Carter Smith (Megan), Matthew Carter (Erin), Lain Smith, Shane Kinchen (Dylan), Millie Yates (Dylan Turner, fiancé) all of Brunswick. Ten great grandchildren, and lots of nieces and nephews.
