

Flo was born in Fort Payne, Alabama but had resided in Brunswick for the last 60 years. She was the daughter of the late Dr. O.W. and Flora Pauline Clayton. She was married to the love of her life, the late Harold Melvin Baxter Sr. for sixty-seven wonderful years. They were blessed to have two sons, Mel & Danny, four grandchildren & four great-grandchildren with a 5th on the way. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Brunswick.
Mrs. Baxter was the Administrative Assistant to the late Sonny Miller at the Brunswick Recreation Department for over 26 years. There she watched as her husband coached, her sons grew up and she grew to cherish her extended recreation family as well.
Mrs. Baxter was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. O.W. and Flora Pauline Clayton; her loving husband, Harold Melvin Baxter Sr.; a sister Mary Smith. She is survived by her caring sons, Daniel “Danny” Lee Baxter (Kasey) of Brunswick, Georgia and Harold “Mel” Melvin Baxter Jr. (Lee) of Saint Simons Island, GA; four grandchildren, Brett Hutson Baxter (Mallary) of Saint Simons Island, GA, Samantha Baxter Crum (Jimmy) of Brunswick, GA, Brooke Baxter Ackerman (Riddick) of Saint Simons Island, GA, and Ashley Clayton Baxter of Saint Simons Island, GA; four great grandchildren, Dru, Kerrigan, Palmer & Harrison, two brothers, Dr. O.W. Clayton Jr. of Birmingham, AL and Archie B. Clayton (Melissa) of Charlotte. NC and several nieces & nephews.
Mrs. Baxter was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Affectionately known as “FloJo”, her family was her life. She enjoyed cooking her famous chocolate pound cake and southern cornbread for them. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 24, 2016 between the hours of 5:00 - 6:00PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A memorial service to honor her life will be held immediately following at the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with the Reverends Bob Brearley & Alan Dyer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Hospice of the Golden Isles.
