July 28, 1934 – January 12, 2022
On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, Frances Jouett Allen, loving wife of G. Millard Allen, Jr., passed away at the age of 87 in St. Simons Island, GA.
Frances was born to Francis Marion and Myrtle Corbett Jouett, on July 28, 1934 in Shreveport, LA, where she grew up. Following in her father’s footsteps, she proudly attended and graduated from LSU in 1956, where she was a member of Chi Omega fraternity – Phi Gamma chapter. Post graduation, this Tiger Alum took her early career by the tail as she began work for IBM.
Knowing a good man when she saw him, Frances married G. Millard Allen, Jr. on May 18, 1957. What began 64 years ago as a Navy wife, became a journey of building a family, making life-long friendships and creating lasting memories. Known as “Mere” to her grandchildren, Frances leaves a strong legacy, as she and Millard were blessed with four lovely, smart, and spirited daughters - Beth Allen Kirkman of Plano, TX; Janet Allen Johnston (Bart) of Addison, TX; Amy Allen Cooke (Greg) of Northbrook, IL; and Susan Allen Shipp (David) of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX. As the family grew, the blessings continued with 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandsons. Other relatives are brother, Jerry Allen Jouett and wife, Jerre, of Longview, TX; and sister Lyn Jouett Woods of Spring City, TN.
Frances was very active in community affairs and athletic endeavors, especially tennis and golf. She excelled as a competitive tennis player and an avid golfer with an admirable balance of competitive spirit and sportsmanship. She enthusiastically shared her love for sports with her children and grandchildren.
Frances’ servant approach as a volunteer, placed her in many roles of support and leadership. She served on the Board of Golden Isles Arts and Humanities, the Brunswick Area of Transportation Committee, serving two terms as the President of the Cassina Garden Club, President of Sea Palms Home Owners Association, President of Sea Palms Ladies Golf Association and an active member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church.
Frances loved and lived life. She was continuously observing and admiring the vast species of beautiful birds and the natural habitat around the Golden Isles. She made it a priority to share this love with her little ones - to look, listen and learn as much as possible. In addition, she and her husband, Millard, traveled extensively for business and pleasure to many corners of the world and shared their adventures of places visited by sending postcards to her family and friends.
A loving wife, mother, friend and Mere…Frances Jouett Allen, leaves a lasting legacy and will be dearly missed by all.
The family extends special appreciation for the support and care provided by her dedicated caregivers and by Hospice of the Golden Isles.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the following:
• St. Simons Presbyterian Church
• Coastal Georgia Historical Society
• Cassina Garden Club
• Hospice of the Golden Isles
• The Coastal Symphony of Georgia
