Born November 17, 1922 in Atlanta to Georgia and Greer B. Copeland, she graduated from Girls High and went on to attend the University of Georgia, chosen a UGA Beauty, and Penn State on an Engineering Scholarship.
An extended New York City girls’ trip to find summer jobs landed her a modeling career that eventually brought her home to Atlanta, and then to St. Simons when her stepfather was transferred to head up Gulf Oil Corporation’s Distribution in Brunswick.
With a successful career in modeling, but also a flair for decorating and architecture, her true calling was to be a wife, mother, and homemaker.
In 1958 Frances married Harry D. Graves, Jr. a golf professional and a perfect fit for her, coming from a golf family. She was a terrific golfer, bridge player, an avid reader, who loved working in her yard, painting, cooking and entertaining. But most importantly, it was her devotion to being a mother that brought her the most joy. She is survived by her daughter, Georgia Graves.
Her funeral service will be held at Christ Church Frederica at 2pm Saturday, October 10.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to Christ Church Frederica, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Glynn County Animal Services, the Humane Society of S. Coastal Georgia, or Hospice of the Golden Isles.
