Frank Merz Butterfield, Jr. “Jef” of Amelia Island, Florida passed away on July 11, 2018 at the age of 69. Jef was born in Cheverly, Maryland on October 31, 1948 to Frank Merz Butterfield, Sr. and Mary Joyce Butterfield. He was a graduate of the Marist School and received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Carolina.
He was married to his loving wife Cecilia David Butterfield on March 26, 1972 and had recently celebrated his forty-sixth wedding anniversary.
Jef spent forty-five years in the building material industry. During his career, he was CEO and President of three manufacturing companies: Master Door Company, Coastal Moldings and Gossen Corporation. Throughout his years in the industry, he loved the people he worked with and was grateful for the friendships he made along the way.
Mr. Butterfield also served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Afterwards he served in the United States Reserves for many years. He had the utmost respect for those who served our country and would always stop to shake their hand and thank them for their service when he met someone in uniform.
Jef was an avid pilot who held instrument and commercial ratings. Over the years he was an owner operator of several planes including the King Air which he loved to fly.
He was predeceased by his father, Frank Merz Butterfield, Sr. Jef is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia David Butterfield, his mother, Mary Joyce Butterfield, his daughter, Ashley Butterfield Peters (Christian), his son, Frank Merz Butterfield, III (Sarah), four grandchildren, Elizabeth Cecilia Peters, Mary Christian Peters, Frank Merz Butterfield, IV. “Jack” and Caroline David Butterfield. Jef was is also survived by his sister, Cynthia Butterfield Glover (J. Littleton “Litt”), his sister-n-law, Roselyn David Davis (Wilbur), several nieces, one nephew and several other family members.
Jef was a quiet, unassuming man who was a devoted husband, son, father and granddaddy. Affectionately known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren, “Uncle One F” to his nephew and nieces, Jef was also a recipient of endless hugs from his beloved standard poodle “Ariel”. His faith, his family and his friends were his top priorities in life. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched during the time he was with us.
The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, July 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Williams Catholic Church, St. Simons Island, Georgia.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, 830 N. 19th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53233 and the Charles E. Kubly Foundation, 1341 W. Mequon Road, Mequon, WI 53092.
