

George Raymond Almasi, 92, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, died Peacefully in his sleep on the 29th of April, after a short Illness. George is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Clayton) Parks of Augusta and son Jonathan (Patrice) Havens of St Simons Island. He is also blessed to have had seven grandchildren. Tyler, Nicholas (Brianna) and Samuel (Jillian) Parks of Augusta, Jackson and John Abbott Havens of St. Simons Island, Phillip Havens of South Carolina and Megan Havens of Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Vilma Almasi, his brothers John and Louis Almasi, as well as his first and second wives, Gracie Burns Almasi and Joyce Havens Almasi.
George faithfully served in the United States Navy and began his military career in 1951 as an enlisted sailor. After a pause in his enlistment to attend Purdue University in his home State of Illinois. He returned to the Navy having attained a Degree in Electrical Engineering. Returning to Active Duty he completed Officer Training and Naval Aeronautics Schools allowing him to leave the sea and take to the air serving as a Naval Aviator in Korea and Vietnam. He retired to St. Simons in 1975 having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Feeling the need to stay connected to his chosen career he became an active member of The Retired Officers Association.
Before, during and after his years in the Navy George enjoyed many hobbies. He was a member of the Golden Isles Woodworkers where he shared his knowledge of fine woodworking. He and his wife Joyce were active with the Golden Isles Players and used their love for acting to assist training of law enforcement at the FLETC on the old Glynco Naval base where he had been stationed in 1966. George’s love for travel took him all over the globe and at 83, he traveled to Antarctica getting him one step closer to saying that he had traveled to Every Continent. He was a man of many talents and many loves and he will be deeply missed by those that he influenced through his community service, and especially his friends and family.
Currently, there are no immediate plans for a Memorial Service, but will be announced when scheduled. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in George’s name to the American Cancer Society.
