George was born April 1st, 1931 in Lowndes County, GA to his parents Hatcher and May Connell. His younger sister, Barbara Dukes, precedes him in death. He graduated from Echols County High School in 1948. He served with distinction for four years as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force.
In 1955 he was fortunate to receive the hand of Louise Clayton and their marriage prospered for fifty eight years and eleven months. In 1957, George and Louise were blessed with their daughter Cindy Connell, now Cindy DeBarry. His life is celebrated by Louise and Cindy; his son-in-law Keith DeBarry; two grandsons and their wives, Jeremy and Megan DeBarry, and Sean and Jessica DeBarry; great-grandchildren, Branden, Zoe, and Donovan; niece and nephew Belinda Aldern and Wade Dukes; and many extended family
members and friends who so enriched his life.
George and Louise lived in Frostproof, FL, before relocating to Brunswick GA. George worked with the Hercules corporation for most of his career, beginning in a work camp, and eventually moving into the front office at the Brunswick Plant from which he retired after a forty-two year career.
George leaves his family and friends with a deep and lasting legacy. His devotion to the Lord and the Church, work ethic, morals, frugality, tireless devotion to family and friends, sense of humor, and refusal to tolerate foolishness, are characteristics that will be cherished and that mark the lives of his descendants.
George was an active member of College Place United Methodist Church until his illness. He and Louise thank the members of the congregation who have provided comfort through visitation and prayer throughout their lives, and especially during his illness.
He was a joyful and prodigious grower of green things, and worked tirelessly in his gardens. His home continues to be beautiful and bountiful because of his love for gardening. He loved to travel and deeply cherished his time spent abroad in Europe during his military service. He made travel a part of his family tradition, visiting extensively in Georgia and Florida with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, even after his stroke. He deeply enjoyed animal companions, and raised many pets as part of his family, including dogs, cats, and horses.
A visitation will be held at Edo Miller Funeral Home, Sunday, May 11th, 2014, at 2pm, with a service to follow at 3pm. Immediately after the service there will be a fellowship gathering at College Place United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 10th, at 11am, at Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake Park GA.
