George William Rivers, Jr., most recently of Greensboro, Georgia passed away peacefully on Monday, September 30, 2013 at his home at the age of 63. George was born January 18, 1950 in Lawrence, MA and was the son of the late George Williams Rivers, Sr. and Laura Peron Rivers. He grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Monson High School in Monson, MA. In 1977 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA, and was a Registered Professional Engineer. During the Vietnam War, George proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the USS James E. Keyes. He married the former Lynette Miller on September 11, 1970. George enjoyed a rewarding career as the owner of Rivers Engineering, Inc., where he was still working at the time of his death. George enjoyed fishing, boating, politics and especially Georgia Tech football. He cherished most his family and doing things for and with his granddaughters. George was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and family man that will be missed greatly. The Rivers lived in Greensboro since 2005, moving from Conyers, GA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Faith Ann Foley. He is survived by his wife, Lynette Miller Rivers of Greensboro, GA; a son, Brian Rivers and wife Anna of Fayetteville, GA; sister, Shirley Smith and husband Bob of Sutton, MA; two granddaughters, Sara and Abby Rivers; mother-in-law, Pat Miller; sister-in-law, Dicky Lipthratt; brother-in-law, Bobby Miller; his beloved dog, Lily, and cat, Xander; a number of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in Greensboro, Georgia at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Dr. James Choomack officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until time for the service at the historic Hall-Thomas House, 109 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. Funeral Services will be held in Brunswick, GA on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1105 Union Street, Brunswick, GA 31520 with Rev. Dawn Mayes and Rev. Danny Grace officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until time for the service at the Presbyterian Church. A private burial will follow at Palmetto Cemetery, 3412 Ross Road, Brunswick, GA 31520. Serving as pallbearers are, Bart Altman, Brian Harrison, Bobby Miller, Reggie Eaton, Gene Poppell, and Bill Parker.
