So shocked to hear this news. So many of my life's best stories include Ham.  He was a dear, dear friend.  I have no doubt that heaven is a more colorful place because you are there.

Hammond Sale was a dear friend.  I knew him in college and was a groomsman in my wedding.  He was visiting around two years ago and was still the same Ham as we always knew.  He was funny, happy and outgoing as ever.  Although we didn't see him often, he was always in our thoughts as a life-long friend.  We will miss him.

I'm shocked and saddened to learn of Hambones passing.  He was my college roommate and a groomsman in my wedding.  Unforgetable is a word best used to describe him and his friendship.  I have a big hole in my heart today.  RIP and God Speed.

Hammond was a very sweet and hard working person, and so intelligent. He was always willing to lend a hand to help others without question. It is wonderful to know that he did get to know Christ as his Lord and Savior. Prayers go to him, and may he rest in the arms of the Lord without anymore pain or suffering.

I was so lucky to see you for the unfortunately last time at the 2007 reunion. I think you flew in from Texas and we were able able to hug, hang out and have some laughs. All I know is that from the first time we met in 1979 you had the sweetest smile and kind eyes with a personality to match! One summer day when Ham and I were about twelve years old, we were sitting in the front room of the Hungerford home going through our usual, “What do you want to do today?...I don't know.  What do you want to do?” routine.  After ruling out beach, sports, and general mischief options, Ham says, “Wet's [he sometimes said “wet's” instead of “let's”] put on a show!”  By that afternoon, we had a play, a set, and wrangled some other actors, most likely Bookee, Cha Cha, and other neighborhood kids.  There may have been some skits thrown in for good measure.  We went door-to-door selling tickets and put on the show in his back yard.  Probably 15 to 20 people attended.  Of course, Ham was the master of ceremonies!  
   That was Ham in a nutshell.  Spontaneous, fun, eager to try something different.  He was a creative guy – so were Kelly Hodnett and Matthew Hendrix.  No matter what age they go, it's way too soon.  
   I saw Ham for the last time about ten years ago on the island.  We had a montage of family photos that needed to be framed.  Mrs. McKenzie (Mike's mom) told me Ham was the best framer in town.  I took it to Ham and asked him to pick a frame and backing – surprise us.  He did a fantastic job, and it proudly hangs in my mother's foyer.  
   Cha Cha, Bookee, Susan, and Corkey, our thoughts and prayers are with you.  We will miss the lad.

We accepted Ham into our family, loving and helping him as if he were one of our children.  He was always willing to help us any way he could and never had a bad thing to say about anyone.  He will truly be missed here on earth but one consolation in losing Ham is knowing he will rest in peace in God's arms.

I hope and pray you are in a better place...maybe back on East Beach! We had a great childhood there! I still remember your beagle dog named Dudley following us all over the island on our bikes! Miss you my friend-stay cool!

growing up on saint simons island, ham was the coolest older kid on east beach... he had the best army men, the black light posters, and he pretty much ran the house... 

he was a dynamic and positive influence on me and the other younger kids... we all learned a lot about life from ham and probably became better people as a result... he will be missed.... -robert stanford

Ham was such a good person. He was such a great soul to be around. He taught me the good ole "Low Country Boil, and gave me his infamous "Ham Salad" recipe.  I have only known him for a short while, as I just moved to GA, and  after knowing Ham, I have come to realize there still are some  wonderful people still around .He took me on a tour of Brunswick about a 2 months ago, and while doing so he taught me a few things about taking photos.  He was in the process of painting a mural of our tour and sadly will not get to finish it.  I will dearly miss Ham. May God give grant peace to him and his family. Laveena

You were my first fiend on St. Simmons when, our family moved there in 1970. It has been over 30 years since I last saw you, but we had some great times. You were also a great business man, the time at St. Simmons Elementary when you charged me 3 dollars to use your tennis shoes for a field day race against Ronnie Geen, the first 40 yards went great, but the last 10 didnt go well. Rest in peace my friend. Love Garland!

I think it was 1968 when the cutest boy was in my class at St. Simon's elementary school. His name was Ham. Heartthrob for all the girls!!! There's always a special bond with those that you remember from grade school and it's hard to lose any of them. I will always remember Ham's giggly, silly self and his funny nickname, Hambone!!! :) Thanks for the memories. Rest peacefully, sweet man! Godspeed to your family.

In late 1999,I was recently divorced and ran into Ham in Murphys Tavern. After a few dates we ended up in a year long romance.He was the best cook and his BBQ ribs and steak were awsome.Ham became a chef on an old 1929 yacht and when it was not being used he would wine and dine me on board.Ham was always very classy and knew how to treat a lady right. I moved to California and he was to move with us but his mom became sick and he stayed behind.He came for a visit and we took off for a fun filled weekend in Las Vegas and wound it up at The Ritz Carlton in Laguna Beach.There we had a champagne/caviar dinner and a beach front room with a fire place.It has always been one of my fondest memories.As life would have it ,we both moved in different directions but always remained close friends.He came one last time to visit me and we spent a beautiful weekend on Catalina Island.We laid in the sand all day and rented a golf cart to tour the island.I loved Ham since we were kids and always enjoyed his sense of humor and cute boyish ways.Ham was always a positive person and had a way of making sure a good time was had by all.I will miss my dear friend and my prayers go out to his family. Rest in peace Hambone..I love will always you!

Saw Ham a couple of years ago but then lost touch.  I assumed he had left the area again.  My loss for sure.

My favorite memory would be Ham and Rusty Flournoy acting out a Cheech & Chong skit for a talent show.  Funny stuff!

A great East Beach guy. Ham quick with a smile,,,,,, condolences to the family.

Ham was always the life of the party.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.  Especially, little Ham.  I pray they find peace in this distressing time knowing that God's love will wrap around them and hold them!

The story I remember most about Hame occured in either third grade; Ham saw me draw a poster using 3-D lettering and he was really excited about it, and he asked me to teach him how to draw like that. So I spent the night with Ham on East Beach and we used magic markers and poster paper to practice the skill. The next morning a few more friends came over and we watched American Bandstand on television. 

Of course we did a lot of things together over the next few years, but I really appreciated how excited Ham was with my drawing and I was impressed with his enthusiasm to learn. Ham was always a sincere and likeable guy - and everybody was his friend. I also rememebr that Ham loved Three-Dog night and he was singing "Jeramiah was a Bullfrog" while playing the air guitar.
