

Harold Melvin Baxter, Sr., 91, of Brunswick, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Harold was born July 17, 1922 to the late Wallace and Martha Baxter in Fort Payne, Alabama. While living in Alabama, he attended the University of Alabama where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. Mr. Baxter served his country with honor and distinction as an Army communications specialist during WWII, landing in England and taking part in the Normandy landings in France. He moved to Brunswick in 1956, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church and where he also started coaching the Elks Little League baseball team in 1959 and coached it for 19 years straight. For a total of 30 years he taught and coached both football and baseball. Many people have told the family that they don't know how their life would have been if not for Mr. Baxter's teaching, influence and being a positive role model. He enjoyed working with Allied Chemical Company, where he retired after many years of hard work and dedication. Harold loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife: Florence C. Baxter of Brunswick; two sons: Mel Baxter (Lee) of St. Simons Island and Danny Baxter (Kasey) of Brunswick; four grandchildren: Brett Baxter, Samantha Crum (Jimmy), Brooke Baxter and Ashley Baxter and two great grandchildren: Dru and Kerrigan.
The family will receive friends from 5-7PM on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at 3:30PM on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Chapel Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Brunswick, (708 Mansfield Street, Brunswick, GA 31520) or to Hospice of the Golden Isles, (1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525)
