Harry Aubrey Clark passed away on June 12, 2026, at Hospice of the Golden Isles at the age of 91 and with his beloved family by his side.
Harry was born in Brunswick, Georgia on September 18, 1934, and was a lifelong resident of the Golden Isles except during his years of military service and undergraduate and graduate education. He was the son of the late Jacob Francis and Flossie Annie Whitehead Clark and was an active member of Troup 1 of the Okefenokee Council of the Boy Scouts and an American Legion junior baseball player throughout his childhood.
Harry attended Glynn Academy High School, where he lettered in baseball and basketball and served as President of his Junior Class. Upon graduation from Glynn Academy in 1953, Harry proudly served in the United States Navy, stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, Little Creek, Virginia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty and while continuing to serve in the United States Naval Reserve, he earned an Associate degree from South Georgia College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Southern University where he majored in biology and minored in chemistry, an additional Bachelor of Science Degree from Georgia Southern as a mathematics major, and a Master of Education degree from the University of Georgia.
Harry’s 33-year career as an educator in the Glynn County Public School System began in 1962. His first teaching assignment was at his alma mater, Glynn Academy, where he taught mathematics for five years. Harry was then selected to help open Brunswick High School and serve as the inaugural Chair of its Mathematics Department in 1967. After five wonderful years in the classroom at Brunswick High, Harry was promoted to Assistant Principal of Jane Macon Middle School for several years. He then served as Assistant Principal of Risley Middle School, before being promoted to Principal of Saint Simons Elementary School, a position in which he was honored to serve for a decade. Harry was then promoted as the Glynn County School System’s Director of Federal Programs, a central office position that he enjoyed until his retirement. Throughout his extensive career, Harry remained dedicated to the delivery of quality education to Glynn County’s youth and treasured his deep relationships with his students, their families, and his fellow educators.
Harry and his wife and fellow 33-year educator, Mary Virginia Nugent Clark, retired together and continued to devote considerable time to their collective lifelong passions – the outdoors, their garden and yard, fishing, physical fitness, traveling to 48 states and several other counties, community service, and supporting their children and grandchildren in their activities. He was also dedicated to the Marshland Federal Credit Union, serving as an active board member for 16 years, chairing its Scholarship Committee and providing financial support to deserving youth for each of those 16 years, serving on its Supervisory Committee for 13 years, and serving on its ALM Committee for a decade. He was also an active member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church for 61 years, serving on its Parish Council.
Harry was most dedicated to and passionate about his family, as they were a great source of joy and pride for him. He fully supported each of the interests of his wife and daughters, who felt his unwavering devotion in every activity. He coached youth sports for multiple years and missed very few dance recitals or high school or college games in which his children played or cheered. He similarly supported his grandchildren in their endeavors, and they benefited from that attention and love.
Harry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Virginia Nugent Clark, his daughter Elizabeth Clark Morrison (Bill) of Atlanta, Georgia, and his daughter Mary Ann Clark Miller (Greg) of Valdosta and Saint Simons Island, Georgia. He is also survived by four grandchildren: John Gregory Miller of Valdosta, Georgia, Sydney Morrison Holder (Jake) of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Jacob Clark Miller of Valdosta, Georgia, and Mary Claire Morrison of Atlanta, Georgia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Harry is also survived by his best friend since elementary school, Terrell Davis. He is preceded in death by his brother, Hubert Calvin Clark.
A funeral Mass will be held at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brunswick, Georgia on Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m., followed by a reception in its Xavier Hall. A graveside service will be held on June 20 at 4 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Atkinson County, Georgia.
