Hazel Redding Keen, 88, of St. Simons Island, GA passed away Wednesday April 25, 2012 at her residence. Graveside service will be held Thursday May 3, 2012 at 10 am in Christ Church Frederica Cemetery, 6329 ferderica Rd., St. Simons Island, GA
Mrs. Keen was born in Morris, GA. She attended Southwest Georgia College on an academic scholarship. After graduation, she worked for Hercules Powder Company, in Brunswick, as a stenographer. She quickly made many friends there, including William R. Keen, who became her husband. Bill and Hazel loved and raised three children. They took pride in designing and building their house on St. Simons Island, a home that holds many happy memories of the more than 50 years they lived there. They moved to Mississippi for a short time, before retiring back to their home on St. Simons Island. There they enjoyed friendships long established on the Island, and the fishing and crabbing along the beach.
The people Hazel encountered during her lifetime will remember her for kindness, southern hospitality, and the rare ability to connect deeply with humor and a strong will. Few people met her that didn’t receive a hug. She was able to carry on a conversation with nearly anyone. She was considered brave in leaving home to attend college, and always remembered those times fondly. She told many stories of her adventures, but her favorite topic was frequently the times shared with her children and their many adventures.
Mrs. Keen is welcomed to Heaven by her parents, a sister, a brother, a daughter, her husband and her son.
Mrs. Keen is survived by a sister, in Alabama; her eldest daughter, son-in-law and three grand children in Oregon; and her daughter-in-law and four grand children in Colorado, all who remember her lovingly.
Hazel Redding Keen will be missed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, GA.
