

Mrs. Tuten was a native of Appling County, having resided in Glynn County for the past 70 years. She graduated from Surrency High School in 1936 as Valedictorian of her class. In 1938 she graduated from South Georgia College where she was honored as "Miss South Georgia College." After the death of her husband in 1968 she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in English from Georgia College in Milledgeville. She taught school at the junior high and high school levels for many years, both prior to her marriage and subsequent to her husband's death. After her retirement from active teaching she enjoyed tutoring children with special needs.
For approximately 65 years, Mrs. Tuten was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors are her sons, James Russell Tuten, Jr. (and wife, Kissy); John Alec Tuten (and wife, Anne); Ernest Wicker Tuten (and wife, Renee); and Mark Malone Tuten. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, James Russell Tuten III (and wife, Gracia); Lynn Tuten Love (and Husband, Mark); Russell Albert Tuten; Alex Anne Thiel (and husband, Bart); Jennifer Tuten Kurz (and husband, Scott); Joseph Wicker Tuten; and Daniel Tuten; as well as 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at First Baptist Church with interment to follow in Palmetto Cemetery. Dr.James H. Wigton, Rev. James Crandall and Rev. Dawn Mayes will be officiating.
Active pallbearers will be: Richard Lyons; Ken Tollison; James R. Tuten, III (Bubba); Russell Albert Tuten (Rusty); Wicker Tuten and Daniel Tuten.
The family expresses its appreciation to all the caregivers at the Senior Care Center of the Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.
