Helen Clift Gilmore of St. Simons Island, Georgia died January 15, 2022, just thirteen days shy of her 100th birthday. She was from Bay City, Michigan and was the second oldest of three daughters of Lyle and Helen Clift. Her older sister Caroline Rexer preceded her in death and younger sister Marian McKinley survives.
She attended Smith College, Northampton, Mass. (Class of 44) but graduated early in December of 1943. She met her future husband Dr. Robert W. Gilmore while attending Smith College. They were married January 22, 1944.
Helen was a music major in college and played the bass violin in the school orchestra. She was also an accomplished pianist. She later received her teaching license and taught the piano.
She resided in Michigan City, Indiana with her husband Dr. Robert Gilmore for most of her life. Dr. Gilmore was a well-known and admired pediatrician in Michigan City.
They were avid golfers and art enthusiasts. They also enjoyed traveling and travelled all over the world on various excursions.
Once Dr. Gilmore retired they moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia where they could golf and spend time with family and friends.
Helen lost Robert in 2010 but continued to thrive and enjoy her friends on St. Simons Island and her family that visited often.
She is survived by her three children: son, Robert W. Gilmore Jr. and his wife Barbara, son, Dr. Peter Gilmore and his wife Elizabeth, and daughter, Gina Reed (Gilmore) and her husband Tony. She has four grandchildren; Lori Miltenberger, Geoffrey Gilmore, Tracy Gilmore and Tony Gilmore. She also has eight great grandchildren.
Helen had a zest for life. She was a devoted and loving wife, a caring and nurturing mother, and a loyal and admired friend.
