

Born to Horace V. Shurling and Stella Langford Shurling on Feb. 5, 1921 in Surrency, Ga. and lived in Dodge County, Ga. until in 1943 when he moved to Brunswick, Ga. to work at the JA Jones Brunswick Shipyard. He served in the US Army and later was employed by the Hercules Powder Company in Brunswick, Ga and retired after 27 years of service. He owned and operated his own electrical and construction companies for many years. He served on the Brunswick Housing Authority Board for 30 years. He was a charter member of the College Place United Methodist Church and served in many capacities. He was an organic gardener, enjoyed fishing, hunting and breakfast (at Maggie Mae’s). He especially loved spending time with his only grandchild Philip Barker.
Horace Shurling was predeceased by his parents, sisters Mary Engel, Glenavin Cason, Delano Bellflower and Helen Shurling.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years the former Verma Watson of Brunswick, daughters Cheryl (David) Ussery of St. Simons and Nanci (Craig) Cody of Brunswick, grandson Philip Barker of Brunswick, brother Jason (Violet) Shurling of Helena, Ga., step grandchildren Courtenay Cody of Atlanta, Ga. and Melody Moore of McIntosh County, and numerous nieces and nephews.
At his request the body was donated to the Medical College of Georgia.
Memorial service will be held at the College Place United Methodist Church on Wednesday March 6, 2013 at 11:00am with the Rev. Rob Grothere and the Rev. Justin Yawn presiding. A visitation will be held at the church at 10:30am prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be to the College Place United Methodist Church.
