Isabelle (“Bess”) Brown Wolfes, 55, died at home on Wednesday, August 4, 2021. Born on April 14, 1966, Bess was the younger of two children born to Hannah deSoto Brown and Stephen Scherer Brown, Sr. Bess was a graduate of Georgia Southern University, began working with the Darien Telephone Company in 1990 and served as their Customer Services Manager. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Darien.
Following Bess’s tragic death, seven members of her immediate and extended families received over two thousand messages of condolence. Repeatedly, Bess was praised for her “inside and outside” beauty; her selfless, copious contributions to her community; her loving, giving heart; and her keen personal skills, intelligence and sharp wit. Her impact on those whose lives she touched is immeasurable.
Bess’s immediate family – her Mother, Brother and sister-in-Law (Ingrid Brown); nephews, Stephen and Nick Brown; and stepsons, Scott and Adam Wolfes – will grieve her loss profoundly. Other closest kin -- Jackson Thomas, Mary Lou Forsyth and Mary Alice Thomas, who worked with Bess every day of their lives – may never get over missing her. Bess’s cherished yellow Lab, Mako, is safe in the loving care of Ms. Hannah.
Many extended family members who loved and respected Bess -- including Donna and Barry Padgett of Merritt Island, Florida and Philip Brown of Statesboro, Georgia -- and all of her co-workers at the Darien Telephone Company, will truly miss Bess, as well. She leaves a legion of friends with broken hearts, especially her closest girlfriends, Stephanie Turner McCurdy of Shellman Bluff, Georgia, Jane Goodson Bluestein of Brunswick, and Sandy Robson and Lisa Clarke of Rhode Island and Maine, respectively.
Bess was preceded in death by her Father, Stephen Scherer Brown, Sr.; her Stepfather, Andy Tostensen, Jr.; her paternal and maternal grandparents, Warren and Isabelle Brown of New Jersey and Al and Mildred deSoto of Darien; her beloved uncle, Sonny deSoto and aunt, Sisi deSoto Beaver; and uncle, Reggie Jackson.
Bess methodically recorded provisions for her end-of-life celebration. True to her personality, she “did NOT WISH for any FUNERAL HOME visitation” … but “home visitations and a FUN and UPBEAT” celebration after a family-planned memorial service would be fine!” She emphatically stated that no one was to wear black!
As per Bess’s wishes, a brief memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at 11:00 AM, in the Chapel of the Edo Miller Funeral Home in Brunswick, Georgia (3321 Glynn Avenue, Brunswick, GA 31520). All are invited to celebrate Bess’s life.
Memorial contributions may be made to HART (Humane Animal Resource Team, Inc., P. O. Box 936, Darien, GA 31305) or to a Bess Brown Wolfes scholarship fund being established at Marshland Credit Union, 3650 Community Road, Brunswick, Georgia 31520.
Edo Miller and Sons is in charge of the arrangements. You may sign the register book and leave condolences for the family at www.edomillerandsons.com
