James was born October 2, 1932 in Statesboro, Georgia to parents Rueben Early Belcher and Mittie Mae Joyner Belcher.
James was predeceased by his sisters Martha Wilson, Josephine Belcher, and Eloise Howell. He is survived by his wife Anita Belcher of Brunswick, GA, his son Donald (Carla) Belcher of Tennille, GA, his grandsons Ethan Belcher of Smyrna, GA, and Austin (Katie) Belcher of Dearing, GA.
He was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving as a Paratrooper with the 187th Airborne RCT during the Korean Conflict. James volunteered for the army and the paratroopers upon graduating from Statesboro High School. He then volunteered to serve in Korea.
James was passionate about hunting and fishing and followed in his father’s footsteps by sharing his knowledge of the woods and waters with his son. The fondest memories are of dropping the Gheenu in the rivers of Georgia and Florida, spending the weekend on the water, frying fish on the riverbank, and camping on a sandbar under the stars.
James was a member of the St. Simons Presbyterian Church. James’ family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice of the Golden Isles for the wonderful care given to him in his last days. He will be inurned with military honors at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia. The service will be held on April 19, 2022 at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 https://hospice.me/giving/general-donation/
