I am blessed to have had Jim Townsend as my Grandfather. Being Billie's oldest grandchild, I had them the longest but not nearly long enough even as I failed him the last few yrs as I battled illness. I spent every summer, holidays in Darien....Jim taught me to drive at 12 in his old Mustang, took me crabbin' every summer, always made me feel special, safe, loved - even shedding a few tears when they put me on my 1st plane ride at age 9 - harder I cried, the more he teared up. I could not have asked for a better grandfather & great grandfather to my son, Nikolas. He loved my grandmother & he loved us by choice. He was honest, straight forward, always had a good story peppered with unique south GA vocabulary from his coming up yrs, his pet crow, the Army, many truck driving stories including cooking his canned soup/ stew/beans on the engine as he drove, working for Dr. Rogers at the drugstore, the Shrimp Boat with John Sawyer and ever colorful stories from the Texaco, no matter how often I heard them - they were the best. He also knew when a storm was coming with many hurricane stories especially one when he and my grandmother met. I was honored he came to Atlanta, because it is filled with nuts as he said, to attend my wedding reception. He was so good to my great grandparents with those overnight drives from Darien to TN every summer, as he would help my Pa while always keeping an eye on us. He was good to everyone though he would tell you if you were a nut or kook or if you were lolly-gagging and always shared his views about lawyers, politicians, & doctors! He raised my cousins, Jason & Heather, as his own for which I am so grateful. For all of these reasons & more than I can list, I am so very honored & blessed beyond words to have had 'Papa' Jim as my Grandpa...Captain! (as he punctuated most conversations)
