
John Newton Booth, 92, of St. Simons Island passed away Friday, July 27, 2012 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at St. Simons Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Robert Brearley officiating.
Mr. Booth was born on September 29, 1919 in Athens to the late Addie Mack and John Lamar Booth. He attended the University of Georgia where he was later inducted into The Gridiron Society.
After serving as an officer in World War II and receiving a Purple Heart, Mr. Booth began a forty-one year career with Southern Bell Company. His various positions with the company took him throughout the state of Georgia where he ended his career as Assistant Vice President of Public Affairs in Atlanta. He and his wife retired to St. Simons Island in 1982. He was a true southern gentleman and was well respected by colleagues and friends.
Mr. Booth was a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of St. Simons Rotary.
He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Louise; daughter Beverly Howard (David) of Oak Ridge, Tn.; son Lamar Booth (Beverly) of Atlanta; daughter Sally Miles (Lanier) of St. Simons; grandchildren John David, Derek and Stephen Howard, John Booth and Morgan Miles; and eight great-grandchildren.
Family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to St. Simons Presbyterian Church or Hospice of the Golden Isles.
