John "Jack" R. Olsen Sr.

Mr. John R. "Jack" Olsen, Sr., 82, of Darien, Georgia, was called home to the Lord on Monday, December 24th, in Brunswick, GA. He was born December 22, 1930, in Brunswick, GA, to the late Marie M. and Richard Louis Olsen, Sr., of St. Simons Island, GA. He was the middle child of five siblings: Elizabeth, Richard "Buddy" Jr., Jack, Kay, and Mickey. Mr. Olsen was raised on Sapelo Island and attended grammar and high school in Darien. Throughout his school years, he was an avid athlete and was a lifeguard on St. Simons Island as a young man. He graduated Darien High School in 1950 and attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA. Afterwards, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served three years in Japan. By the early 1960s he had returned to Glynn County permanently to settle down and raise a family of his own. Mr. Olsen retired from Georgia Pacific in 1996 and returned to his beloved Darien.

As a resident of Darien, he was an active member of The American Legion and could frequently be found at the Waffle House or Huddle House, where he enjoyed visiting with old friends and making new ones over a cup of coffee. Mr. Olsen was a lifelong resident of McIntosh and Glynn Counties.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Olsen is preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth Lewis of St. Simons Island, GA.

Mr. Olsen is survived by three siblings:. Richard L. Olsen, Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA, Mrs. Kay Olsen Carrier of Charlotte, NC, and Mr. Mickey Olsen of Darien, GA; two children: John R. "Ronnie" Olsen, Jr., of Brunswick, and Robin Olsen Smith of Dallas, GA; and one granddaughter, Delaney Rae Smith of Dallas, GA. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews that will all remember him as the favorite and infamous "Uncle Jack."

The family will receive friends at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick on Thursday, January 3rd, 2013 from 6-8 pm.

Funeral service will be held in the chapel at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home Friday, January 4th, 2013 at 1pm. with Rev. Earl Parrish officiating. Interment will follow the service in Oak Grove Cemetery in Brunswick, GA, with military honors.

Serving active pallbearers will be Mickey Olsen, G.B. "Bud" Carrier, David Carrier, Mike Olsen, Eric Olsen, and Brett Hammond.
