Mr. Rivers was born October 2, 1922, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Joaquin B. and Carmen Thomas Rivers. Mr. Rivers had been a resident of Brunswick since 1959. He was employed with the National Marine Fisheries Services from 1959 until 1973, and then with The University of Georgia Marine Extension from 1973 until his retirement in 2002. Mr. Rivers was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy.
Mr. Rivers was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Louis Rivers, II, and a sister, Emily Rivers Roderick.
Survivors are his wife, Anne Bennett Rivers of Brunswick, a son, John Rivers (Nancy) of St. Simons, a daughter, Susan Rivers Lipthratt (Kelly), seven grandchildren, Amanda Reed (Kevin), Jennifer Swan (Alex), Meredith Lee, Brooke Tabbott Reyna (Chad), Major Christopher Rivers (Kristine), Martha Anne Bryant (Ben), and Blake Lipthratt (Kristen); nine great-grandchildren, Jack Reyna, Alex Swan, IV, Lee Reed, Eli Swan, Luke Reed, Emberleigh Swan, Andy Bryant, Maria Rivers, and Lilliana Rivers, and a nephew, Louis Rivers, III.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday from the Chapel of the Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. James Crandall officiating. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Palmetto Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be: Major Christopher Rivers, Blake Lipthratt, Kevin Reed, Ben Bryant, Alex Swan, Chad Hall, and Jack Reyna. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the University of Georgia Marine Extension, Charles Baldwin, and Walter Corbin.
The family requests contributions to Hospice of the Golden Isles, Brunswick, Georgia. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday night. A reception will be held at the funeral home after the services.
