Dear Teltsch Family, 

Growing up down the street from Katharine & Emily in Huntcliff, I was over at your house a lot. Memories of your home, your family and of your parents are a big part of my youth. I have such great memories of all Teltsches — dinners at your house, fun in the snow in the golf course, swim team, having fun hanging out while your parents went out to dinner and the ensuing slumber party shenanigans… I am so sad to read of your father’s passing. I send my love to you all.

I was deeply saddened to receive the news of John's passing.  John was a force of nature.  I loved calling him to chat and I knew he chuckling on the end of the line, when he got quiet with that silent laugh of his.  I can see from all the notes here, he touched so many people and he will be deeply missed.  He was a special man and I can't say I've known anyone quite like him.  He had an adventurous life and a lively spirit.  I will remember him for many years to come and my heart is with you in this difficult time.  May his memory be for a blessing on his whole family and all who remember him.

Nous avons rencontré John et Kitsy en septembre 1985, depuis nous n'avons cessé de les apprécier, de les aimer.
En France où ils sont venus souvent nous voir à Paris et en Bretagne.
La première fois, en Bretagne, en juin 1986 avec leurs 3 filles et leurs amis Sheila et Bob et leurs enfants ils ont voyagé en vélo, pour un tour de Bretagne.... 
En Suisse pour des journées de ski.
Nous avons toujours passé de merveilleux moments.
La bienveillance, la joie, l'humour et l'amour que John apportait et donnait nous remplissait de bonheur et d'amitié.
De Bretagne, ce 12 février 2025 à  17h ( 11am)   nous serons avec vous pour l'accompagner dans ce nouveau voyage, en priant dans une église et allumerons des bougies pour que leur lumière monte avec lui. 

Bon Voyage John  et love pour Kitsy et toute leur famille.

John taught me about the notion of punctuating the year with traditions and celebrations. He believed in showing up and celebrating the fun events, like baptisms and confirmations and weddings and anniversaries.

He spent one Friday night in Chicago, watching one of our kids perform for the New Trier High School’s freshmen girls’ interpretive dance performance--what a champ!

Forty years after he introduced me to it, we can’t go skiing without finding a restaurant that serves raclette.

John was a force of nature, and I admired him so much.

His example has made all who knew him better for it.

Like everyone who knew him well, I was lucky to have had John Teltsch in my life. He made me laugh; he made me cry. He shared strong values, and he was a great role model.

I met John though my in-laws, Sheila and Bob Berner. Sheila and Kitsy had gone to Noroton and Manhattanville together and became lifelong friends. That friendship was incredibly powerful, not simply for the obviously impressive duration but more so because it helped spawn dozens of additional friendships. Many of those have inspired even more friendships, and I am a beneficiary of these ripples of love.

Later I would learn that Kitsy and John lived at my mother’s (Ethel Kennedy) parents’ in Greenwich when the new Mr. and Mrs. Teltsch first returned from their honeymoon.

Adding my kids to the list, a full four generations of my family have enjoyed the marvels of friendship with the Teltsches

John was funny, and he loved to laugh. He didn’t care if he was at home or traveling, eating in a fancy restaurant or hiking a mountain trail. He would crack up and then roar  with a laugh then heap appreciation for whoever got him going.

He could be serious, too. I read Sursum Corda, and I was deeply moved and very affected by it. I did not hear him talk much about the stories he wrote about, but when he did, it was powerful and left those who heard him full of awe.

John had a powerful sense of right and wrong, and he was proud of it. In a sense, he shared those values as one might share a present. I always felt like he was sharing a gift with me, and that is at least how I happily took it when he commented to me after observing behavior that affirmed his instincts or violated his beliefs.

Attending mass must have been at the top of his list of esteemed habits, and he was sure we were all there in church with him, no matter the country, the time zone, or the local language.
