

Johnnie L. Poppell, 89, of Brunswick, formerly of Cox, GA, died, Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Sears Manor Nursing Home. Graveside rites will be held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 3PM in Poppell Gardner Cemetery, Cox, GA, with Rev. David Riddle officiating. Scott Speed, Chris Speed, Steven Poppell, Craig Poppell, David Poppell, Randy Poppell and Sean Poppell will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mickey Ryals, Kenny Williams, Leonard Williams, Jessie Shiggs, Bill Rozier, Buddy Middleton, Butch Bolin and Richard Bolin.
Born December 23, 1921 in Montgomery County Georgia to the late Otha Hill and Susan Caroline Morrison, she was a homemaker raising six children and worked as a quality control inspector for Altama Delta. Living most of her life in Cox, GA, Mrs. Poppell was a member of Townsend Baptist Church, and was very active in the church before moving to Brunswick. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Eugene Willard Poppell, and two sons, Earnest Poppell and Pat Poppell.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Poppell and wife Sue of Longview, TX, Stevie Poppell and wife Sandy of Cox, and John Poppell of Darien, one daughter, Gloria Thompson and husband Bob of Shellman Bluff, two daughters in law, Daphne Poppell of Darien and Ann Poppell of Cox, 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and a dear friend and caretaker, June Brazell.
