I had the privilege of meeting Jonathan when we served together on the Board of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society in St. Simons Island. We were back-to-back presidents, and during my term, he assisted me in countless ways. As our work together deepened, so did our friendship. The more I came to know him, the more I understood why he was so widely respected.

Jonathan was a man of remarkable intellect and curiosity. He was highly regarded in his professional field, yet he never stopped learning about subjects far beyond his work. He wrote thoughtful pieces for The Wall Street Journal and other publications, always pushing himself to understand more, to think more deeply, to contribute more broadly.

He was a Marine — always a Marine — and the Corps never forgot him. He was invited to numerous events and carried that identity with quiet pride and unwavering loyalty.

But above all, Jonathan was a devoted family man. He loved his beautiful wife, Kathryne, his children, and his grandchildren. It was rare for us to share a lunch when he didn’t speak of them with joy, admiration, or gratitude. His devotion to Kathryne was profound, and in his final years, her care for him surpassed even that devotion — a true and tender love story.

Janis and I will always be grateful for the calls, concern, and kindness Jonathan and Kathryne extended to us during the period when Janis was undergoing cancer treatment. Their compassion meant more than they ever knew.

Jonathan was, in every sense, a great man — thoughtful, loyal, accomplished, curious, generous, and deeply loving. We will miss him, and we will keep him in our prayers.

Jonathan was unique and greatly appreciated, as a Marine (there are no former Marines, only Marines) one of “the few, the proud”,  by his many friends and the Sea Island community.  He leaves behind a beautiful legacy with his family — to whom he was devoted, many accomplishments, financial acumen, and patriotism.  Those of us who played golf with Jonathan remember his skill, strategizing and sense of humor.  Semper fi!
