Joseph Allen Newton Jr.

The Reverend Dr. Joseph (Joe) A. Newton, Jr., of Brunswick, passed away on November 11, 2010, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be held 2PM Monday, November 15, 2010 at Lakeside United Methodist Church in Brunswick with Rev. Bert Newton and Rev. Charles Buddy Coss officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark Stambaugh, Tim Thomas, Johnny Newton, Phil Flornoy, Michael Black and Edwin S. Poole III. Interment will take at Greenlawn Cemetery in Waycross at a later date.

He was born October 23, 1935 in Live Oak, Florida to Joseph A. Newton, Sr and Irene Roberts Newton. He grew up in Newark, New York. He studied history at Stetson College, divinity at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and received his Doctor of Ministry from Vanderbilt University.

He began his career as pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church near Heber Springs, Arkansas, and was currently pastor of the Ludowici United Methodist Church in Ludowici, Georgia. He and his wife Nancy served as missionaries with the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Board in Morocco and Jordan during the 1960s and 1970s.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Lee Walker Newton, and sons: Joseph (Joe) Allen Newton, III of Valdosta, Andrew (Andy) Lee Newton and wife Karen Bushaw-Newton of Falls Church, Virginia, Elbert (Bert) Walker Newton and wife Gloria Martyn Newton of Pasadena, California, and John Mark Newton of Athens; grandchildren Ella and Elias Newton of Falls Church, Virginia; and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Walker of Nashville, Tennessee.
