
Joseph L. Smith, 88, died on January 30, 2016 on St. Simons Island, Georgia . He was born in Chicago but grew up in Passaic, New Jersey, just west of New York City. He attended Passaic Collegiate School, Phillips Academy (Andover) and Yale University where he played football and was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. Following graduation, he joined the American Sugar Refining Co. and was stationed in Philadelphia. His career was interrupted by the Korean War, and he spent 32 months in the Army, was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. After his discharge, he joined the newly-formed Consumer Products Division of Monsanto Chemical Co. as a sales representative in Philadelphia. Two years later he was transferred to Atlanta as Southeast Grocery Manager, supervising 21 food brokers in 7 states. When the division was purchased by one of the soap giants, he had to choose between a transfer to New York headquarters or a fresh start in Atlanta. He joined the advertising agency McCann Erickson working on the Coca-Cola Account and spent the forty –five years in advertising, being a principal in his own agency for the 10 years. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club, the Yale Club of Georgia and the Sea Island Club. He was a licensed pilot, an avid sports fan, dedicated golfer and played hockey in the Atlanta Amateur League for 20 years.
He is survived by his long term sweetheart of 19 years, Karen Davis Edwards. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
