Kathryn Anne, “Kathy”, Arens died September 1st, 2013 in the exceptional care of Hospice of the Golden Isles. Ms. Arens nee Zemens was born in Detroit, Mich., June 24, 1948. She attended La Salle High School in St. Ignace in the upper peninsula of Michigan, was a graduate of Dearborn High School and the University of Michigan and took additional classes at Lansing Community College and (at that time) Brunswick Community College. Moving from Lansing, Mich., in 1977, she had lived on St. Simons Island for 36 years. Her local employment included 14 plus years as a staff accountant for Ray Arens CPA, four years as the GED Examiner for Glynn, Camden and McIntosh counties, two years in the Aging Resources department of Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center and five years, eight months and two weeks on the Community Life desk and as a proofreader at The Brunswick News. Ms. Arens did volunteer work for the United Way, St. Francis Xavier School and its School Board and Finance Committee, as a literacy tutor at the Adult Education Center and as a lector, Eucharistic minister, CCW officer and member of the Hospitality and Bereavement committees and Bill’s Bloomers at St. William Church. She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, David, Amy, Ella Grace and Coen Daniel Arens, all of Brunswick; her sister, nephew, niece and grand nephew, Anna Jo Zemens of Richmond, Calif., Allen and wife Lisa of Martinez, Calif., and Terri Jo Richmond and son Jamie Richmond of Chicago, Ill.; her former husband and his wife, Ray and Mary Katherine Arens of St. Simons Island; many of her former in-laws and their children who were important in her life, most still residing in Michigan; and several special friends including, but not limited to, Lane Warren and Carolyn Favole, both of St. Simons Island. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. William's Catholic Church-- 2300 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island-- on September 5th at 11:00 am. A celebration reception will follow in the parish hall adjacent to the church. In lieu of flowers, Ms. Arens requested that contributions be made to the donors’ favorite charities.
