

Lawrence Lamar Floyd, 89, of Brunswick, GA. died unexpectedly Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems. Lamar had been a resident of Brunswick, GA since 1947, and was born February 2, 1925 in Lumber City, Georgia to the late Quincy Otis Floyd, and the late Mary Ray Floyd.
Lamar graduated in 1941 at the age 16 from the Lumber City High School, and attended the Atlanta Business College. At the age 18 Lamar enlisted in the United States Army, a veteran of World War II, having landed at the Omaha Beach on D-day, serving as a forward observer with the Army Signal Corps all the way to Leipzig.
Lamar retired from Hercules in 1981, after working his way up from a lowly extractor to a floor walker in charge of 32 workers to Plant Shift Supervisor to Area Relief Supervisor and finally Safety Supervisor, he often spent two-week blocks at a time in Chicago at the National Safety Council where he received an Advanced Certificate of National Society.
Lamar was the first Manager/Administrator of St. Mark’s Towers, where the Activity/Recreation building is named for him. He was an active board member until the day he passed. He worked numerous other jobs, and was involved in the community until his death. Some activities closest to his heart were serving on Board of Trustees for the local hospital, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, participating in Woodmen of the World activities, and being an advocate for those with Dementia through Alzheimer's Association of Glynn/Brunswick.
Lamar is a member of the Ocean Lodge #214 F& A.M. Brunswick, GA. He has advanced through the “chairs” in three paths, once to become Worshipful Master of the Blue Lodge, the Knight of the York Cross of Honor, and finally Illustrious Master in the Council of Royal Select Masters. He is also an active member of the St, Mark’s Episcopal Church. He had served as senior warden of the vestry, Sunday school teacher/youth sponsor, Eucharistic lay minister, and visitation team.
In addition to Lamar’s parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Agnes Maddison Floyd, and a son- in – law Gene Wood.
Lamar is survived by his twin daughters Dianne Wood of Kennesaw, GA, and Cynthia Sikes ( Charles) of Statesboro, GA; five grandchildren Simone Lane ( John) , Allison Cox ( Sean), Shaun Sikes, Devon Parker ( Joe), and Sabrina Thornton ( John); eight great-grandchildren Brittany Lane, John Daniel Lane, Fair Thornton, Maddison Cox, Morgan Cox, and Brenton , Nathan, and Sophie Parker; and numerous other family members.
A celebration of life service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2014 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Brunswick, GA , with Rev. Alvin Crumpton and Rev. Alan Akridge officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Columbarium.
A reception immediately following the service in the Parrish Hall.
