Mabel Josephine "Jo" Mason

Mabel Josephine (Jo) Carpenter Mason, 79, of Jesup, GA., entered peacefully into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on Friday, February 11, 2022. She was born in Brunswick the daughter of the late George Orison Carpenter and the late Jane Irene Carpenter.

Jo, as she was affectionately known, was a native of St. Simons Island, GA. She graduated from Glynn Academy in 1961. She met her husband, Bill, in December 1965 on a blind date and they were married on March 4, 1966. They moved to Cherry Point, NC while Bill was in the Marine Corp. They moved back to St. Simons Island, GA in 1970. They lived on the island with their 2 daughters till 2002 when they moved to Jesup, GA.

She was very active with the American Legion Auxiliary and had been a member for 78 years. She held several positions in both the local, district and state levels. She enjoyed making lap throws that were given out by the American Legion Auxiliary to the veterans and their spouses in the local nursing homes of Brunswick.She was active with the volunteer fire department and was known by many as MOM. She helped man the radio at station 2, held position of treasurer for many years but her main function was over rehab for the department. She had also been involved with the Golden Isles Emerald Society, Elks Lodge #0691, Bunco Club, Canasta Club, Golden Isles Retired Firefighters Association, Veterans Council of the Golden Isles, Golden Isles, GA Retired Educators Association, 224th JCSS Veterans Association, Coastal Republican Women’s Club, and her church, Akin Memorial UMC.

She loved to spend time with her family. She enjoyed all types of needlework. Very seldom did you see her without her crocheting and cross stitch with her. She enjoyed playing cards, spanish weaving, and volunteering. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her many memories are her husband of almost 56 years William “Bill” F. Mason, Jr.; two daughters, Yvonne F Dixon (Tommy)of Brunswick, GA and Billie Jo Hickey (Chris) of Jesup, GA; six grandsons, Timothy Mason (Ashley) of Brunswick, GA, Lee Faulk of Riverside, CA, Michael Johns of Jesup, GA, Andrew Faulk (Kassandra) of Foley, AL, Thomas Dixon of Brunswick, GA, and Jake Hickey of Santa Barbara, CA; three granddaughters, Christina Johns of Jesup, GA, Debra Williams of Brunswick, GA and Casadi Nielsen (Chris) of OK; four great grandchildren, Mowgli Mason, Teagan Mason both of Brunswick, GA, Clara Nielsen, Colby Nielsen both of OK; several nieces and nephews; numerous adopted children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service to honor her life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 5, 2022 in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends between 1 - 2 PM, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Coastal Hospice at 1700 Frederica Rd. Ste 205, St. Simons Isl., GA 31522.
