

Madelyn was born in New London, CT on April 14, 1939 to the late Alexander Paton Cuthbert and the late Aileen Bentley Cuthbert. Madelyn was an Education Specialist (retired) with the Groton, CT Public Schools. Music was a large part of Madelyn's life. She was the choir director for many years at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Groton, CT and at Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Waterford, CT, where she also served as an Elder on the church Session. Madelyn sang with the New London (CT) Chorale for many years. After moving to GA, she was a choir member at Saint Simons Island Presbyterian Church, where she also served as a Stephen Minister. She played the baritone horn in the Brunswick (GA) Community Band. Madelyn enjoyed her Scottish heritage. Besides living in Scotland for several years with her family in the 1970s, she enjoyed traveling to the various Scottish highland games around the eastern US.
Madelyn is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Ronald D. Shafer of Brunswick, GA; children Ron Shafer (Maggie) of Brunswick, GA, Heather Tober of Arnold, MD and Erik Shafer (Amanda) of Brunswick, GA. Madelyn is survived by 3 grandchildren: Mallory Tober of Jeffersonville, IN, Beatrix Tober of Arnold, MD and Ethan Shafer of Brunswick, GA.
A celebration of Madelyn’s life will be held at St. Simons Island Presbyterian Church with the date and time to be announced.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be made in Madelyn’s honor to St. Simons Island Presbyterian Church, 205 Kings Way, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
