
Marietta Allen Jacobson, resident of St Simons Island, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 28. She was being cared for in her final months by her daughter, Janet Miller and her family, in Hopewell Junction, New York.
She was born in New York City, was raised in Norwalk, CT, and in her adult years lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Norwalk and Brookfield, CT before retiring to St Simons. She took great pleasure living on St Simons Island and was involved in many activities on the island including work as a guide at the lighthouse. Marietta was actively involved with Christ Episcopal Church.
Marietta graduated from Tufts University in Medford, Mass with a degree in psychology. She later obtained a Masters degree in Education. She worked for the Armed Forces Security Agency in Washington DC before working at Kirtland Air Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After moving back to Connecticut, Marietta became a second grade teacher working in Brookfield elementary schools for over twenty five years. At her retirement dinner celebrating her years in teaching, it was frequently mentioned how she was able to maintain order with all sorts of children without ever losing her composure.
Marietta was preceded in death by her parents, John and Charlotte Allen, and her brother, John David Allen.
She is survived by her loving brother, Rodman F. Allen of Nacogdoches, Texas, her forever grateful son and daughter, Gary Jacobson of Albuquerque, NM, and Janet Miller and her husband, Steve, of Hopewell Junction, NY. She was always very proud of her three surviving grandchildren, Carissa Miller of New York City, and Stephen and Matthew Miller of Hopewell Junction, NY. She is also survived by her nieces Karen Allen Strong living in Fiji, Charlotte Allen Sedillos of Temple, Texas, her nephews, Peter Allen of Danbury, CT and Rod Allen of Nacogdoches, Texas. Marietta was a very loving daughter, sister, parent, grandmother, and aunt putting her family above all else. Her kindness, generosity, caring for others, and her wonderful sense of humor will be missed and cherished by her surviving family and many great friends.
Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on St Simons Thursday, April 3 at 2:00 PM. A short burial service at Christ Church will be held immediately after the funeral.
