Marlene was born in Meadowbrook, West Virginia, to Carl Ellis Tichnell and Mildred Bennett Tichnell. She graduated from Cosmetology school in Brunswick and opened her own shop, Marlena’s Beauty Salon. Marlene loved to shop and go camping with her family. She enjoyed cooking for friends and family and made sure no one was ever hungry! She attended Darien Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Poppell and a great-grandson, Hudson Poppell.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Poppell of Darien; two sons, Emery and Jason Poppell, both of Darien; two sisters, Marie “Cookie” Watson and Ruthlyn Hawkins, both of Darien, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Darien Church of God with Reverend Tommy Whaley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the McIntosh Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Roger “Reb” Blakesmith, Stephen Calhoun, Jordan Corban, William “Juice” Merriman, Emery Poppell and Dustin Sumner.
