Mary was born as Mary Cornelia Young in Sterling, Georgia on August 31, 1929 and was 94 years old. She was the daughter of Alva Clyde Horton Young who raised her and her brother Oscar Clements Young, Jr. in Everett City, Georgia. The three of them remained close throughout their lives. Her father was Oscar Clements Young, Sr.
Mary attended Ballard Elementary School, Glynn County Jr. High School and was a proud graduate of the Glynn Academy Class of 1947 participating in basketball and chorus. Mary loved people and everything social. Fishing, crabbing off her dock, going to the beach and being outdoors in the fresh air and sun just made her feel good.
While in high school Mary, her mother and brother moved to downtown Brunswick and she began a 10 year career with Georgia Power Company as a customer service representative until she married and had her first child, with two to follow. It was also during this time that she began attending her beloved First Baptist Church in downtown Brunswick and joined on March 23,1949. This was the start of a fulfilled lifetime participation in everything offered there. She was the epitome of a proud and active member participating in many roles which included being a 5th grade Sunday School teacher, many visiting ministries, volunteering at Manna House, being a faithful member of the Berean Sunday School class and being a proud member of the First Baptist Church choir for over 67 years. She was honored and presented with a plaque of appreciation from First Baptist Church Choir for her dedicated service from 1947 to 2014 during the Spring Concert in 2014.
Mary loved people! She didn’t know a stranger and was always willing to give a helping hand, go visit or bake some goodies for someone under the weather or new to the neighborhood. The Belle Point Annual 4th of July picnic was held in her marsh front backyard for over 20 years. She loved everything “neighborly”!
Mary loved family! She provided a loving and welcoming home for her children and their friends, her grandchildren and relatives.
Over the years Mary was active in several Bridge clubs, Garden Clubs, and Women’s Clubs and was a room mom on several occasions and was a PTA Member. She was a participant in the survivor walks for the American Cancer Society, being a breast cancer survivor herself.
Mary was married to the late Olin G. “Sonny” Hall, Jr. who preceded her in death in 1981.
