Mary Jo Farmer Leary of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, went home to the Lord on Friday, November 16, at the age of 92. She had been a long-time resident of Atlanta and Saint Simons Island, most recently at Marsh's Edge.
Mary Jo Farmer was born July 27, 1926, in Lexington, Kentucky, the daughter of James Farmer and Frances Ashbrook Farmer. She was the Valedictorian of her graduating class from Harrison County High School. After graduating from the University of Kentucky where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, she moved to Atlanta where she worked as a laboratory technician at Emory University Hospital. Mary Jo married Floyd Leary in 1953 and was married until his passing in 2015.
Mary Jo was an active member of church congregations wherever she lived and enjoyed her involvement in women's groups both in Atlanta and Saint Simons. She was a member of Saint Simons Presbyterian Church. It is a great comfort to know that her faith has brought her safely home with her savior, Jesus Christ. She now lives in perfect peace and is again united with loved ones who have gone before her.
She was an avid bridge player. She also spent time enjoying traveling, golf, art, reading, and attending thoroughbred horse racing events around the world. She was an excellent cook for her family.
She is survived by her three children and their families: Linda Leary Cherniavsky and her husband, Fyodor, of Atlanta; John Leary and his wife, Karen Meadows, of Atlanta, and their children, James Leary and Mary Kate Leary, of Atlanta; Lisa Leary, of Dunwoody, and her sister, Frances Farmer Lee, of Louisville, Kentucky. She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, her parents, James and Frances Farmer, her stepfather John M. Reed, and her aunt and uncle, John and Mary Gray Gibson.
Services will be held at St. Simons Presbyterian Church at 205 Kings Way, Saint Simons Island, on Saturday, December 1, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following at the church.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to longtime family friend, Diane Jacobs, for her steadfast service in caring for Floyd and Mary Jo Leary. Thanks to the staff of Marsh's Edge and Hospice of the Golden Isles for their support.
