

Mary Clayton Smith passed away at The Retreat at Marsh's Edge on November 11, 2011. The daughter of Dr. Olney Walker Clayton and Pauline Wheeler Clayton, Mary was born on December 29, 1922 in Fort Payne, Alabama.
Residing in Glynn County since 1956, she was a member of The Brunswick Junior Women's Club, the Auxiliary of Glynn-Brunswick Memorial Hospital, MAP International, the First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Mary Martha Circle, the Fellowship Sunday School Class and where she and her dear friend Bebee Inman founded the Altar Guild. She was a devoted member of her special bridge club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Bruce Terry Smith, Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Perry (Bob) of St. Simons Island and Barbara Clark (Jim) of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Mary Claire Jones (Carter), Emily Dillmann (Doug), Marti Bland (Ed), Kelli Perry, Christopher Clark (Colby) and Paige Clark Yousefbeigi (Ahmad); and five great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. Also surviving are her sister Florence Baxter (Harold) and her brothers Dr. O. W. Clayton (Dot) and A. B. Clayton (Melissa) and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at The Retreat at Marsh's Edge and Hospice of the Golden Isles for their gentle loving care of Mary and their supportive attention to the family.
Graveside services will be held at Chapel Park Cemetery, 1180 Cate Road, Brunswick, on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11:00 am. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mary Martha Circle and the Fellowship Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church. The family requests memorials to The First United Methodist Church, Hospice of the Golden Isles or a charity of choice.
