

He was the son of Edward Andrew and Elise Johns Permar and brother of Andrew Johns Permar and Pamela Permar Shierling.
Matthew graduated from Glynn Academy in 1971 and attended Brunswick Junior College (now College of Coastal Georgia), LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, and graduated from Lake City Community College in Lake City, Florida with a degree in golf course maintenance.
He spent several years working for the Sea Island Golf Course, as well as for the Sea Island Landscape Department.
In 1990, he came to work for The Islander Newspaper and became its publisher after the 2003 death of his mother who founded and first published The Islander.
He served for many years on the St. Simons Island Library Board and was the first chairman of the Marshes of Glynn Library Board and; on the 4-H Advisory Council; and most recently the Glynn County Islands Planning Commission.
His passion in life was music and fun.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother Andy. He is survived by his sister Pam, sister-in-law Debbie Permar, nephews Scott (Jordan) and Steven (Adrianne), and three great nieces Elizabeth, Zoe, and Dylan.
Honorary pallbearers are: Tommy Watson, Philip Sheffield, Cap Fendig, Bo Fahs III, Taylor Adams, Richard Adams, Buddy Adams, A.J. Berry, Andy Berry, and Buzzy Ramsey.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion at Gascoigne Bluff (1013 Arthur J. Moore Drive, St. Simons Island) on Sunday, November 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All are welcome.
