Melvin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Frances Harper, his two sons, Tim Harper (Rhonda) of St. Simons Island, GA and Jimmy Harper (Darcy) of Atlanta, GA and “daughter” Crystal Purvis Yeager of Atlanta, GA and his five grandchildren; Tyler Harper, Evan Harper, Elise Harper, Ansley Harper, and Sims Harper. He was pre-deceased by his son, Melvin Bruce Harper and his parents, Mattie Mae Purvis Harper and Alonzo Harper.
Melvin was born in Douglas, Georgia on April 28, 1930. He was one of nine children. Melvin served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Austria. He retired from FLETC after 26 years of service in November 1990. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Melvin loved gardening and the outdoors, his dog BeBe and working on his projects.
Melvin has a member of Antioch Holiness Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir leader. Melvin loved singing and listen to gospel music, telling stories and making others smile. He was always ready to help others and was loved by everyone he met. He leaves behind many fond memories that will be cherished by all.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 21st, 6 pm until 8 pm, and a memorial service on Saturday, August 22nd, 11 am, at Edo Miller Funeral Home, Brunswick, GA. A graveside service at Palmetto Cemetery will follow.
