Michael John Baker, 75, a devoted husband, father, honorable serviceman, and cherished member of the Brunswick, Georgia community, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, integrity, and service.
Born in 1950, Michael graduated from Mattawan High School in 1968 and went on to earn a degree in Law Enforcement from Lake Superior State College in 1978. His life was marked by an unwavering commitment to duty and justice, which began with his four years of service as an Airman in the United States Armed Forces.
Michael dedicated himself to protecting and serving others through his work in law enforcement. He served with distinction on the Sault Police Force and as an investigator for the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department. In 1974, he trained his loyal K-9 partner, Duke, a three-year-old German Shepherd, for the Canine Section at Kincheloe AFB. His work earned him multiple commendations for bravery and service.
After nearly a decade in county law enforcement, Michael transitioned to federal service with the United States Immigration Service, where he continued his dedication to public safety until his retirement in 2012.
Michael was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Veronica Baker, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage. Their life together was one of deep love, faith, and enduring partnership.
He called Brunswick, Georgia home for the past 25 years and was a faithful member of Saint William Catholic Church on Saint Simons Island. He was a man of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and a deep love for his family.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his beloved children: Tracy, Keith, Sheri, Jayne, Ashley, and step children Chris, Angelina, and Randi, as well as many adored grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love, honor, and devotion.
After retirement, Michael found a stray cat he named Tiger, who quickly became his loyal companion and “partner in crime.” Together, they enjoyed quiet days, playful moments, and the simple peace of one another’s company.
Michael’s life was a testament to the power of service, the strength of family, and the comfort of faith. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
