Friends and family are invited to a celebration of his life on Wednesday, March 28th at 4:00 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A reception will follow the service. The family extends an invitation to join them for the reception even if you are unable to attend the service.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sher Senna Pollard, his brother, David Pollard (Lori), his sister, Patricia Pollard and his grandchildren, Michelle Pollard and Scott A Pollard, Jr. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Scott A. Pollard, his brother Terry Pollard and two sisters, Sue Pollard Shields and Bonnie Pollard Bumgarner.
Mike was born November 2, 1938 in Altoona, PA, to the late Harold S. Pollard and the late Olive O’Keefe Pollard. He grew up in Altoona and after graduating from Altoona High joined the Coast Guard. Although he didn’t make the Coast Guard his career, he was always proud of the time he spent in the military. After leaving the military, Mike attended Penn State University for two years and then began his career. He spent the majority of his career in the food service and hospitality/tourism industry. He started as a Food Service Director for Marriott Corporation and after moving to Georgia worked mostly as Director of Sales and Catering for Lodgian, Inc., the Stellar Center Complex, and I-95 Motel Properties.
Mike loved the Golden Isles and being involved in the community. He was instrumental in starting the Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours program and coordinated their first Mini-Trade Fair. Over the years, he served on the Board of Directors for Amity House and the Easter Seals Speech and Hearing Center and was a member of the Rotary Club. Mike enjoyed coordinating golf tournaments to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and SHARE. He spent time volunteering at his church, St. Simons Community Church and found great joy in volunteering at the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. After retirement, Mike volunteered for ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve) and became the Southeast Area Vice-Chair for the organization. During the years that he volunteered with ESGR, he was presented “The President’s Volunteer Service Award” twice, the “Seven Seals Award” twice and in 2011 was presented with the “ESGR Spirit of Volunteerism Award” which is bestowed each year on a volunteer that has displayed the highest level of volunteer service. When Mike wasn’t volunteering, he loved being on the golf course with his golfing buddies.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, 4627 Hwy 17 N., Brunswick, GA, 31525 or Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Pkwy, Brunswick, GA, 31525. Thank you.
