He was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late Oscar Brandford Covington, Sr. and Inez Coursey Covington. He was raised in the historic district of Savannah and attended Savannah High School, where he had fond memories of playing football. After graduation, he attended Clemson Agricultural College, which was an all-male military school, now known as Clemson University. He also served for 13 years as an artillery officer in the Army National guard and later attended Southern Tech, where he played baseball and obtained a degree in engineering. Following graduation, Oscar went to work for Seaboard Construction and moved to St. Simons Island in the late 50’s to help build the Georgia Pacific plant he would later be plant manager of. While working for Seaboard Construction, he met the late Bobby Burns, who introduced him to the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Zoann Burns Covington.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Zoann, his children Michael Covington (Vickie), Kathryn Covington Petrie (Todd), and Mark Covington (Jessica), six grandchildren Christopher, Andrew, Sara Kate, Shannon, Dawson and Emma Grace, seven great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Angela Burns, and many nieces and nephews. He loved his family beyond measure and took great pride in their accomplishments. The impact of his faith, love, support, devotion and selfless actions will live on for generations to come.
Oscar spent 38 years working for Georgia Pacific in 4 different states. He began and finished his career at the plant in Brunswick, Georgia, retiring in 1998. A longtime member of Christ Church Frederica, Oscar served as Junior and Senior Warden, Sunday School Superintendent, and spent many years volunteering his time as Cemetery Superintendent. His strong values led him to give of his time and talents, volunteering with numerous community organizations, such as Little League, United Way, Salvation Army, and Boy Scouts, earning the coveted Beaver Award. He was also a founding member of the Glynn Academy Booster Club and worked with other local organizations. In his spare time, he enjoyed being with his family and working in his wood shop, building furniture and sharing his skills with others.
The Covington family would like to thank all of the caregivers and Heartland Hospice workers who helped love and care for him.
The celebration of his life will be held at Christ Church Frederica on Saturday, September 21st at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Oscar requested donations be made to his beloved Christ Church Frederica.
