
Peggy Purser King of St. Simons Island, Georgia passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the age of 81 following an extended illness. Born January 14, 1930 to the late Oliver James Purser and Mattie Mullis she grew up in Cochran, GA. Following graduation from Blakely County High School, she received an undergraduate degree from Georgia Teachers College and advanced degrees from Valdosta State University and The University of Georgia.
A lifelong educator, Peggy enjoyed a 37 year teaching career. In addition to being named Teacher of the Year, she was also a leader in the VICA organization.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class of St. Simons Island. In addition to volunteering at the church, she enjoyed traveling with her church group and playing bridge.
She is survived by her children: Becky Canter (Jim) of St. Simons Island; Karen Barnard (Greg Tidmore) of Langston, Alabama; Casey King of New York, NY and Kim Byrd (Lon) of Patterson, Georgia; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of St. Simons Island with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the children’s department at First Baptist Church of St. Simons Island, 729 Ocean Blvd. St. Simons Island, GA 31522,
