Born on July 16, 1947, in Atlanta, Georgia, Phillip was the son of Joe Morris Allen and Mildred Hannah Allen. Raised on the south side of Atlanta, he often shared stories of his humble childhood, growing up alongside his older brothers and learning early the values of hard work and perseverance.
Phil graduated from Georgia Tech in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. He later earned a Master's Degree in Business and obtained his Professional Engineer (PE) License. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career in construction and engineering.
In 1974, Phil made a life-changing decision to leave Atlanta and relocate to St. Simons Island, a place that quickly became home and remained so for the rest of his life. In 1979, he married the love of his life, Linda Lou Allen. Together they built a marriage rooted in loyalty, devotion, laughter, and unwavering support. They traveled the world together, creating cherished memories and finding joy and adventure wherever they went.
In 1985, Phil took another leap of faith and founded Allen & Graham, Inc. Through determination, grit, and an entrepreneurial spirit, he built the company into one of the most respected Industrial construction firms in the region. For more than forty years, he served as President of Allen & Graham, earning the respect of colleagues, clients, and employees throughout the industry.
Phil's life was marked by extraordinary resilience. Following a devastating fall in 2000 that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and a three-week coma, doctors were uncertain about his future. Through determination, and faith, Phil defied the odds. He relearned basic skills, rebuilt his confidence, and eventually returned to help lead the company he had founded. His recovery was nothing short of remarkable and became one of the defining examples of his strength and character.
Outside of work, Phil found his greatest joy on the water. As Captain of his beloved sailboat, The Frederica, he spent countless days exploring the coast, cruising the Bahamas, diving, fishing, and sharing adventures with family and friends. He loved the river, the ocean, the mountains, wildlife, hiking and the simple pleasures of life. Whether navigating rough seas or life's challenges, Phillip approached every situation with the same steady outlook and his familiar response: "that'd be fine."
He was known for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, generosity, and unwavering authenticity. He lived fully, laughed often, and encouraged those around him to do the same. He was a fan of Georgia Tech football, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Atlanta Braves. Remaining loyal to all 3 through decades of disappointment.
Above all, Phil was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Allen; his sons, Benjamin Allen and Christopher Allen (Lauren Allen); and his treasured granddaughters, Saylor (5), Scotlyn (3), and Sunday (1 week). He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Allen (Barbara Allen), along with numerous extended family members and dear friends.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Morris Allen and Mildred Hannah Allen, and by his brother, Tony Allen.
Phil was a member of All Saints Anglican Church. The family takes comfort in their Christian faith and the promise that they will see him again. He was not afraid when death was near; he laughed and joked with the nurses and doctors when his prognosis was grim.
A family graveside service will be held at Christ Church on St. Simons Island.
A Celebration of Life will follow at Captain's Bluff on June 26, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. Parking will be available at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School, with transportation provided by Lighthouse Trolleys.
Fair winds and calm seas, Captain. You will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always in our hearts.
