Ray was born December 4, 1934 the son of the late Charles Matthew Thompson III and the late Rowena Delores Thompson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl Thompson.
After graduating from high school, Ray joined the United States Navy and served his country with honor for thirteen years. He soon became a Petty Officer First Class and was awarded two Good Conduct Awards, One Good Conduct Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. He was Honorable Discharged on January 27, 1967. Ray still wanted to serve his fellow man and then joined the Brunswick Police Department as a Law Enforcement Officer. Later he joined the Glynn County Sheriff’s Department. He finally retired with the Sea Island Resort as a Security Guard. He was also a member of Saint James Lutheran Church in Brunswick, Georgia. Ray will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.
Left to cherish Ray’s memories are his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Patricia K. Thompson of Brunswick, GA; his two daughters, Terina Thompson Bennett of Tallahassee, FL and Carla Spiers Bullock also of Tallahassee, Fl; four sons, Kyle Thompson (Randy) of Pavo, GA, Jon Duncan of Newberry, SC, Judson Duncan of Los Angeles, CA, and Jerry Thompson (Amy) of Statesboro, GA, one brother, Charles Thompson of New Windsor, NY. Twenty-seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Ray loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was also an avid sports fan and loved his Georgia Bulldogs. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will have many fond memories to cherish for years to come.
A Celebration of Life Service with military honors will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday, July 21, 2018 in the Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Bonnie E. Lanyi officiating. A catered reception will follow the service.
