

Rembert Mays Sims, Jr. of Asheville, North Carolina, formerly of Atlanta and St. Simons Island, Georgia, died Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the age of 91. Rembert was born on October 9, 1923 in Atlanta to the late Rembert Mays Sims and Jo (Sproul) Sims. He is survived by his wife Dorie Harris Sims of Asheville; daughters, Jodie (Douglas) Holt of Riverside, California; Laura (Quinn) Francis of Atlanta; grandchildren Karlton Wirsing of Manassas, Virginia; Franklin Wirsing of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; Douglas (Allison) Holt of Knoxville, Tennessee; William Francis of Atlanta; and son-in-law George Wirsing of Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Flanigen Sims and daughter Mary Nevitt Wirsing.
Rembert went to E. Rivers Elementary School and North Fulton High School in Atlanta. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology from
1940 to 1943, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and he graduated with a degree in Industrial Management. While he was at Georgia Tech, the US entered World War II, and Rembert was accepted into the Navy V7 Program (Officer Candidate School), during which he studied at Notre Dame and Harvard. Upon completing the program he was deployed to Guam as a lieutenant in the Naval Supply Corps until the war ended. He was employed by American Security Insurance Company for 27 years and finished his career with the E. W. Blanch Reinsurance Company.
As an Atlanta native, Rembert enjoyed lasting friendships with the Buckhead Boys in Atlanta. He was an early and active member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry and as Junior and Senior Warden. He and Mary were longtime members of Cherokee Town and Country Club, where they enjoyed golfing and socializing with fellow members. They retired to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where they were members of the Sea Island Golf Club and St. Simons Island Club, and Rembert was active with the St. Simons Island Rotary. Following Mary’s death, Rembert married Dorie Harris in 1997, also of St. Simons Island. Rembert and Dorie enjoyed life together in St. Simons before moving in 2005 to Givens Estates Retirement Community in Asheville. The family feels fortunate that Rembert was blessed
with Dorie's love and care through his final years.
Rembert was a devoted family man known by everyone as a true Southern gentleman. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially at his cabin at Lake Lanier in the North Georgia mountains, and he always loved to travel. His ready smile and easygoing nature made him a friend to all. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Frederica, St. Simons Island, Georgia, with the
Reverend Tom Purdy officiating and the interment following. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. in the Parish Hall.
