Dick was born May 3, 1950 in Pontiac, MI where he was also baptized in a Presbyterian Church. He was the son of Richard G. Boekeloo and the late Constance Boekeloo. Dick was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gregg Boekeloo and Jeffery Boekeloo.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Brunswick, GA. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 3:00pm with the memorial service beginning at 3:00. You are invited to a reception following the service to join the family in celebrating a life well lived.
Dick graduated from Anne Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD. After honorably serving his country in the Army, he attended Virginia Tech University majoring in Economics. Dick worked with the university as a DJ where he began his successful broadcast career. He was later employed by Suburban Radio Group for 24 years traveling throughout the USA as a trouble shooter. He was also general manager of WPIQ/WYNR Radio in Brunswick, GA. Dick formed his company, dB Broadcast Services, and was self-employed for 29 years. He became well known as being a “rare” engineer that knew every aspect of the radio broadcast industry. Dick was awarded Engineer of the Year by Georgia Broadcasters Association for playing a vital role in implementing the Georgia Emergency Alert System. Later he was instrumental in implementing the Glynn County Emergency Alert System.
Dick moved to Brunswick, GA in 1976 where he attended the First Presbyterian Church taking photos of church events and helping prepare communion. He was active in his community. He co-chaired the Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. Dick started and organized the first annual “Jekyll Island Beach Music Festival” and continued to be involved for many years. He received the “Georgia Peach Award” and other tourism awards for this event.
Left to cherish Dick’s memories are his loving wife of 30 years, Linda Croft Boekeloo of Brunswick, GA; his father, Richard G. Boekeloo (Donna) of Vancouver, WA; three nephews, Wayne Boekeloo of Port Richey, FL, Bradley (Jessica) Boekeloo of Port Richey, FL and Trey Saunders of Canton, GA; one niece, Tonya Haynes (Bill) of Flowery Branch, GA. He was also survived by several great nieces and nephews.
Dick loved his family and was a devoted husband to his wife, Linda, who was the love of his life. He also loved his canine “children”, Palin and Rico. Dick enjoyed photography, playing the guitar, golf and had a love of horses and going to dude ranches. He was also an avid reader, enjoyed all music and was a licensed pilot that loved to fly. Dick treasured the friendship of many and loved to joke around with them. He always looked forward to caroling with the Dinner Group at Christmas. Dick will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his laughter, his competitive nature and helping others. His family and friends have many fond memories to cherish for years to come and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
